Miss Samotis uses the school garden as a teaching stragegy designed to engage the students in active learning. We use the library, computer lab and artroom to grow and learn together in Integrated Creative Projects.

We started out the school year by celebrating our garden at Open House. We were thankful to see the flowers that grew taller than the school!

We vistited the garden to read books from the library and measure growth and life cycles.

We painted sunflowers just like Vincent VanGogh did. The garden inspired us to be artists!

We celebrated our lost teeth by making a pumpkin patch with our faces!

We studied real pumpkins and leaves by touching and drawing the lines in nature. We made clay tiles with leaves from the garden. It was hard to draw to the lines as perfect as they were made maturally.

As fall turned to to winter we began think about what we would grow next year. Many of us wished we could grow our own real pumpkins...

We discussed our ideas and took a vote...We decided that we are going to build a Pumpkin Patch this spring.

After researching with books and computers we needed to earn money to buy seeds, soil and a deer fence.

So we had a Snowman Sale!

We cooperated to paint wooden snowmen to decorate our town for winter.

Our teamwork was a success...We raised $650.00 for our garden.

During the winter months we read books in the library and played games. We used the internet for research and used different software to draw and write.

Spring time is here !

We have lots of work to do before the end of the year.

1.

We compost with worms. Do you remember what worms eat? Why are they helpful to our garden?

Look here to see the old garden page. This page will show you some of the chores we have in store.

Things to do in the garden:

Clean up leaves

Clip dead growth

Till up the ground

Prepare the soil with more worms and organic fertilizer

Buy a fence, seeds and peat and manure

Find garden tools

Plant seeds and new plants
