ELEMENTARY OVERVIEW GRADES K-2
Students will be introduced to the keyboard as early as preschool and kindergarten. Skills students will need to master at each elementary grade level have been identified.
Keyboarding
is not the only skill this curriculum addresses for the elementary student.
K-2 students will have experiences in word processing, as well as the
introduction of desktop publishing to students in 2nd grade.
Elementary schools will also incorporate technology into all areas of
the curriculum. Students will take
part in a project-oriented approach to technology.
Projects will include research reports, introductory multimedia
projects, and telecommunications with children in other schools via on-line
resources.
Students
will exit 2nd grade:
Having
learned to type 5 words per minute with 50% accuracy.
Having
mastered defined objectives in word processing.
Having
demonstrated knowledge in keyboarding, word processing and desktop
publishing.

keys, and space bar.

10 words per minute with 65% accuracy.
Use
the File Menu: new, open, save/save as, print preview and print.
Use
the edit menu to undo.
Use
the tab key.
Use
a menu to add graphics, integrate with text, highlight text by click and
drag mouse.
Perform
basic text formatting tasks including font style and size, color, bold,
italic and underline.
Be
introduced to use of multimedia (digital, video, DVD and laser disk).
Become
familiar with copyright laws and licensing, Internet etiquette.
Become
knowledgeable of the appropriate use of the Internet, safety rules,
privacy, District Acceptable Use Policy, Internet etiquette.
Develop
a multimedia presentation using designated software (Hyperstudio).
