On Saturday, February 3, several Oscoda Area High School band students traveled to Ogemaw Heights High School in West Branch to participate in MSBOA (Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association) District 9 Solo and Ensemble Festival.  Events were adjudicated in the areas of Tone, Intonation, Rhythm, Technique and Interpretation.  From these five categories, students can earn a Division I (Superior), Division II (Excellent), Division III (Good), Division IV (Fair) or Division V (Poor) rating.  Events earning Division I or II earn a medal, with Division I events also qualifying for State Solo and Ensemble which will be held on March 16 at Midland High School. Of the fourteen events representing the Oscoda High School Band, eleven earned Division I ratings, thus qualifying for State Solo and Ensemble, and three earned Division II ratings.

Bass Clarinet Solo: Stephanie Oakes (12) performing “Sonatina” by Muzio Clementi.

Contralto Clarinet Solo: Stephanie Oakes (12) performing “Earth Song” by Tyler Arcari.

Baritone Saxophone Solo: Joshua McDonald (11) performing “Undercurrent” by Newell H. Long

Trumpet Solo: Alexander Clarke (9) performing “Minuet” by Amy Beach.

Trumpet Solo: Avery Lopez (11) performing “El Torero” by Stanley F. Thomas

Flute Duet: Jaidalyn Kotula (10) and Maya Lopez (10) performing “Flower Duet from Lakme” by Leo Delibes and “Twister Polka” by Gregory M. Kerkorian.

Mixed Duet: Stephanie Oakes (contralto clarinet, 12) and Joshua McDonald (baritone saxophone, 11) performing “Rondo for Two Tubas” by Richard E. Jensen.

Mixed Duet: Chase Morejon (alto saxophone, 9) and Alexander Clarke (trumpet, 9) performing “See the Conquering Hero” and “Bouree from Royal Fireworks Music” both by Georg Frederic Handel.

Mallet Duet: Andrew Moore (12), Hannah Moore (11) performing “Turkish March” by Wolfgang Amadeaus Mozart arranged by Naoka Takada.

Mixed Trio: Emily Fritcher (flute, 11), Mallory Thomas (alto saxophone, 11), River Vito (trumpet, 11) performing “Allegro” by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and “March from Partita in F” by Heinrich Faber.
