We hope everyone is enjoying their summer break and making wonderful memories! As we start thinking about the upcoming school year, we wanted to share the suggested school supply lists for K-6 students. These lists will also be included in the back-to-school information mailing, which will contain class and teacher placements. We anticipate this mailing will be sent out during the second week of August. We look forward to welcoming our students back for another amazing school year!

In an exciting hands-on project, third graders at Richardson Elementary brought their curriculum to life by raising chickens right in their classrooms. This unique educational initiative is part of their "Structures of Life" science unit. Students began by incubating chicken eggs, eagerly awaiting the hatching process. They monitored the incubator conditions, ensuring the right temperature and humidity levels, and learned about the embryonic development stages. Once the chicks hatched, the classroom buzzed with excitement. Ms. Stormer brought the project full circle by bringing in a full grown rooster “Chippy” and hen “Sunshine” for the classes to see. This particular hen was a chicken that started as an egg in Mrs. Simpson’s third grade class last year. Students integrated their ELA standards during the unit with the cultivating activity of presenting the process of raising chickens to other grade-levels. Students focused on the qualities of good speaking, and practiced sharing their research before presenting to their audiences.

Kindergarten students at RES wrapped up their CKLA unit of Kings and Queens by having a royal tea party and dressing as Kings and Queens. This is a collage of the Kings and Queens celebration in each kindergarten class. We also wanted to recognize our local Oscoda Burger King for donating crowns to every kindergartener and being so willing to help us with the event. Thank you!

Congratulations to the Oscoda High School and Oscoda Middle School bands for earning a Superior rating at the MSBOA District 9 Band and Orchestra Festival on March 6, 2024. With this top rating, both bands earned themselves a spot at the state band festival in April. Awesome job to Mrs. Lopez and our band students!

Today WNEM was at OHS to record the OHS band for the WNEM "Sounds of the Season" program. Mrs. Lopez and the 9th-12th grade band students performed two songs that were recorded and will air on the WNEM holiday program December 24th-26th. The OHS band is one of 13 high schools who will be represented in this program. The band sounded great and looked very professional. We can't wait to see what the end product looks like.

A meeting of the Oscoda Area Schools' Facilities Improvement Committee will be held on Monday, November 27th, 2023, beginning at 4:00PM, at Oscoda High School.  Among the topics slated for discussion is a bond renewal which would result in no new taxes levied on the community.  The district invites the community to participate in the planning discussions regarding projects to be completed with this bond including the conversion of heating systems to high-efficiency products, remediation of asbestos, and the incorporation of a community center among many other potential projects.  Please join us Monday, November 27th, 2023, at 4:00PM to voice your opinions regarding the design of this initiative. If you have not done so already, please take a few moments to complete our research survey associated with potential future projects at our schools. This survey can be found at https://forms.gle/DgRSuDzZbMkrKKhS8 or on the live feed of our district website at www.oscodaschools.org.

This morning OHS had our 2nd ever Veteran's Day assembly for our students. This assembly was to inform and showcase to our students just how thankful we are for our Veterans. The students were able to listen to Veteran speakers from each branch of the military and learn about their experiences. They also heard our 5 student essay winners share their writings, learned about how to fold a flag, and listened to our band and choir perform. Throughout the assembly pictures of area Veterans were displayed. Our students did a wonderful job during this assembly! Thank you to all of our Veterans as we celebrate Veteran's Day!
